In order to update and expand the current Iraqi Railways lines, IRR have signed a contract with joint venture of (Al-Burhan Group, Dorsch Consult and ETC Transport Consultants) to provide detailed design and tender documents for Hjama – Sawa Railway Project to upgrade the single line to double line.
The existing single railway line with a total length of 17km, consist of:
- 5 Railway Bridges
- 2 Road bridges
- 23 Box Culverts
-20 Pipe Culverts
In the beginning of the eighties of the last century, SOTECNI an Italian consultant signed a contract with the State Company for Implementation of Transport & Communication / Iraqi Ministry of Transport to provide a consultancy services for Mussayeb – Kerbala – Samawa which pass through Hjama – Sawa Railway sector. The services was involved in preparation of soil investigation, surveying and hydrological data. in preparation of soil investigation, surveying and hydrological data.
Between (1981 – 1984), IRCON International Limited / India, have been awarded a turn-key project to construct the single high way line of Mussayeb – Kerbala – Samawa.
Al-Burhan Group, DORSCH CONSULT Verkehr und Infrastruktur GmbH and ETC Transport Consultants GmbH have set a methodology to perform this project by preparing the satellite images for the alignment and according to this a further detailed survey will be performed and soil investigation will be made to prepare the railway track which will be parallel to the single line.
