Al-Burhan Group started the negotiation process regarding the security operations of Najaf International Airport. The ABG representative and G4S representatives met the Governor of Najaf, Adnan al-Zurfi, in order to discuss about starting to provide security operations for the airport.
G4S is the largest security provider in the world and is already present in Iraq since the beginning of this year, when they took over operations of the country’s largest airport, Baghdad International Airport.
Najaf is a historical city and it is the centre of the Najaf Governorate where it represents an important cultural, religious, commercial and agricultural centre in the middle of Iraq. The Najaf area is located 30 km south of the ancient city of Babylon and 160 km South of Baghdad. The city is of great importance as it hosts a shrine to Imam Ali, the cousin of Prophet Mohammed. It is now a great centre of pilgrimage and it’s estimated that only Mecca and Medina receive more Muslim pilgrims.
The city is inhabited by almost 1 million people, and following the war it started to undergo major changes. It is now fast developing, as there is a need of housing for the locals, but most importantly the touristic potential is set to bring a great deal of investment in the fields of transport, construction and services.
